The San Antonio Spurs are adding a veteran coaching presence to their bench.

According to Shams Charania and Pete Thamel, former Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan has agreed to become San Antonio’s lead assistant coach under first-year head coach Mitch Johnson.

Donovan parted ways with Chicago in April after five seasons leading the Bulls. Prior to his NBA coaching career, he built one of the most accomplished résumés in college basketball, winning back-to-back national championships at the University of Florida before making the jump to the NBA with the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2015.

For the Spurs, the addition brings championship experience, player development expertise, and another respected basketball mind to a coaching staff tasked with accelerating the franchise’s growth around its young core. Donovan’s experience should provide valuable support for Johnson as San Antonio looks to take another step forward in the competitive Western Conference.
